002 | Truth & Loss
House Of Black Lanterns is a front for Dylan Richards' (fka King Cannibal / Ninja Tune) new forays into the nether region between neurotic D&B, Chi-town mutations and noirish electronics; a proper London night music evoking images of pleasured grimace, evasive/invasive dancefloor actions and the ting/tang of good/bad drugs. The lead cut's got a real demonic swagger about it, while 'Like A Warrior' cuts in on dread space previously staked out by early Hyperdubs 'longside Trini/NYC vocalist Juakali, and a re-take of Ghettozoid's 'Boy Toy' runs wide-bassed sci-fi house for the fashion set. On remix detail, Astrophonica boss and D&B/jUKe catalyst Fracture applies lean, trapped-out handiwork to 'Truth & Loss'.
003 | Kill The Lights
House of Black Lanterns is the brand new project from Dylan Richards, formerly known as King Cannibal (Ninja Tune) and Zilla (Warp).
Retaining the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes, House of Black Lanterns sees Richards develop his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet occasionally bleak floorfillers of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann.
Featuring ‘Shot You Down’, co-written by Alpines’ Catherine Pockson, and vocals across the rest of the LP from Trinidadian emcee Juakali, Planet Mu’s eccentric Rudi Zygadlo and British singer/songwriter Leni Ward, ‘Kill The Lights’ is dark but serene, with a beautiful range of tracks throughout.
008 | You, Me, Metropolis
2nd single from House Of Black Lantern's epic debut album, tooled up with Breakage and _Unsubscribe_ (Dave Clarke) remixes. HOBL's 'You, Me Metropolis' is sci-fi footwork futurism par excellence - blazing vangelis-style synth brass entrance gives way to rapid-fire 808 patterns and surging, Bad Company-style D&B synth snarl - whilst 'Worthless' slips on a sinuous triplet ting mind-synching with Kuedo's finest. Remixing, Dave Clarke and studio whizkind, Mr. Jones'_Unsubscribe_ unit overhaul another album cut, 'Broken' as a low slung techno cruiser patrolling the darkest sectors of electro and sci-fi cinematic themes, and Breakage recalibrates 'Shot You Down' to an subs-powered warehouse techno stepper sound.
